About Live Gizmo

Live Gizmo is a free place to play quick games with friends: trivia, crosswords, sudoku, word search, evil hangman, guess-the-drawing and chess. It works in any browser, and you can play as a guest. I’m Pat, and I made it.

Why I made it

Back in 1997 I spent a lot of time on Yahoo Games and Yahoo Chat. You’d pick a game, sit down at a table with whoever was there, and chat while you played. Some of those strangers turned into regulars. It’s what got me hooked on the internet.

I wanted that feeling back: a room, a few people, a quick game and a bit of chat. So I built it.

Who I am

I’m a developer from Adelaide, South Australia. I started out freelancing in 2015, building websites and PHP apps, then spent five years as the full stack developer on a financial analysis platform.

I wanted to work in a bigger team, so I went back to uni and did a Computer Science degree at Griffith University, finishing in 2025. It was a good degree. But by the time I finished, AI had changed the job market for developers almost completely.

So I did what martial arts teaches you: don’t fight the force coming at you, use it. I learned to make AI tools work for me, and used them to build Live Gizmo on my own. It’s the biggest thing I’ve made. AI is in the games too: it writes crosswords on any topic, trivia on any subject, and the drawings you guess in SVG Blast.

How you can help

Live Gizmo is free, has no ads, and is run by one person. If you like it, this is what helps most:

  • Play, and bring a friend. Every room is better with more people in it. Start a room.
  • Test the Android app. It’s in testing, and Google needs testers to stick with it for two weeks before it can be released. Here’s how to join.
  • Tell me what’s broken or what you’d like to see. Email info@livegizmo.com.
  • Follow along on Facebook.
